When the whistle was blown to start the match, it was like the beginning of football for the newly-formed Rams.
However the home side swept into a three-goal lead in the first half as the visitors' naivety showed through, but after that the Rams started to grow in confidence and began attacking and defending in equal measure.
In the second period the Rams pegged two back, through an excellent low-drilled shot from Jack and a tremendous effort from distance by Tom, to set up a tense final few minutes.
And although the Rams had a number of set pieces towards the end of the match, they fell just short.
However Rams boss John Stoneman was delighted with his team's efforts and said: "For our first ever competitive match it was always going to be a big challenge, but I thought all of the team played well.
"We definitely have a number of areas to work on, but I think there is also plenty to be optimistic about for the coming season."
